"Wedding Eve" is the twenty-first episode in the fifth season of the FOX comedy New Girl. It aired on May 10, 2016, as the one-hundred-and-fifteenth episode overall.
Synopsis[]
On the night before the wedding, Nick and Winston try to help Schmidt re-write his vows and Jess, thinking that Sam is going to propose to her, rallies the gang into playing True American to avoid giving him an answer.
Plot[]
After a evening before the wedding, the roommates have a dinner for Schmidt and dinner, alongside Schmidt's mother and her partner Susan, Aly, Winston's girlfriend, Sam, Jess's boyfriend, and Tran whom cooked the lasagna. Nick proceeds to give Jess a walkie talkie for the wedding in case of an emergency. Same watches them both giving an awkward smile. Schmidt's mom states that she feels sorry that Cece's mom will not be in attendance but is in "hot rage" because she does not accept her son, and walk away with Susan, his mom's lover, whom she states have been sleeping together since 1998. Jess and Nick then state that they need to sleep in separate rooms like "boy cousins". Before so, Cece wants to say goodnight to Schmidt and engage in a long passionate kiss, which causes the roommates to walk away awkwardly, Sam to do the dishes and Aly goes to the bathroom. Nick and Jess just stare disgusted until they break them up from the kiss, Jess stating "what is this the last night of drama camp?", which to Winston replies stating to "enjoy while you can, cause it gets boring.. same old lips year after year with no spark, just dead tounges touching, like decayed salmon," causing Schmidt to tell him off, thus breaking up the goodnight kiss with Cece, with Winston saying "I did it!" and throwing two thumbs up.
Jess tells Cece if she is nervous than she has Xanax for the nerves, if she gets cold feet has the passports ready to escape for Canada. Jess states that Sam is an object-ably marry-able guy and tall. She picks up his jacket and uncovers a small box containing a engagement ring. Jess assumes that Sam is about to propose tonight.
Schmidt realized he is missing the flash drive that contains his vows. Winston starts talking to Aly and states she will make a beautiful bride someday, causing Aly to leave. Sam tells Winston he is there if he needs to talk as he just heard the awkward interaction. Winston walks in on Nick and Schmidt looking for the flash drive, and starts to tell them what just happened with Aly. Schmidt tells him what is going on and had the flash drive as a necklace. Winston realizes he stepped on it when rehearsing the hora, when Schmidt fell, the flash drive fell off. Schmidt admits it took nine month to write the vows. Nick agrees to help him write his new vows.
Jess is pacing around and worried about Sam proposing, when Sam opens the door and tell her he has something important to talk to her about. Jess than proceeds to whisper scream. Jess states he is about to propose, and Cece agrees sheepishly in a high voice. Jess knows Cece thinks its a horrible idea but Cece states its Jess that hesitated and may think its not a good idea.
Nick tells Schmidt to tell him when he hears Cece. Schmidt states that Nick is terrible at talking with woman. Flash back, when Regan walked out the bathroom and asked her is she showered everywhere. Winston proceeds to tell Schmidt to turn his back to her, telling him this is terrible advice.
Cece tells Jess to take a breath and relax. Jess says that she will say yes to Sam. Cece tells her to holler in case she needs something. Jess gives Sam his jacket back. Sam proceeds to put his hands in the jacket pockets and says "Would you-" when Jess yells "True American!" telling Cece she is hollering. The guys tell Jess they can not play cause its late and there is no more time. Jess looks at Cece with eyes of help. Cece then states that its is her that wants to play, using the bride card Jess had mentioned to her earlier. Schmidt says they have to for Cece. Everyone starts to play true american. Sam attempts to talk to Jess and she avoids him. Jess and Cece are under the table and Jess states she freaked out. Coach than appears in the middle of the game, who states she has had six wines on the plane. Sam and Jess than pick the same number and end up together.
Sam states to Jess that she has been avoiding him the whole night. Meanwhile, Schmidt admits all he wants to do is make Cece happy and Nick realizes that is what he needs to write the vows. Winston asked Coach for help and asks to play games with Aly. Coach gets upset and tells him to go to Aly and talk to her instead of playing games. Sam then proceeds to tell Jess he wants to break up with her while she states she cannot marry him. They sit down, Jess says she gets it that he is in love with Diane. Sam states when he went to drop her off at the airport he realized he was in love with her, motivated by Winston's speech he knew he had to come clean with Jess. Jess says she freaked out when she found the ring, and Sam asks what ring. The ring is engraved "To my love Susan, From Louise," with Jess stating that Schmidt's mom is going to propose. Schmidt surprised yells for his mom.
Winston goes to Aly's and starts to apologize. Aly states she did not leave because of what he said but because she got food poisoning. She starts to curse out the people who cooked, being Tran. Aly proceeds to tell Winston she loves him, "I love you." Winston looks at her and says, "I love you too," being the first time they say it to each other. As he tries to embrace her, she gets up gagging about to throw up and runs to the bathroom.
Jess apologizes for ruining Louise engagement, which she states is fine. It gets into the conversation everyone has had sex in Jess room, even Coach. Schmidt admits that he never accepted Susan as his mom's partner but is happy for them both at the end, he proceeds to hug them. Cece sees this and walks away crying. Schmidt asks her what is wrong, she states Schmidt is getting two mothers while her own mother isn't even coming. Schmidt then proceeds to hug her while she states she does not know why she is crying in Jess's room that is apparently a sex room, they both giggle.
Jess walks Sam out to the elevator. He questions why she cannot marry him, she states she does not know. Sam states that she does know but doesn't want to say. Jess states she really does not know and as the elevator doors close, Sam says, "its Nick."
As everyone is sleeping, Schmidt packs a bag and walks out of the apartment, taking a moment to look around and closes the door.
